Getting Started: The Essential Paper Quilling Tools

Ready to start rolling? You only need a handful of tools. While you can find them individually, the easiest way to begin is with a complete kit.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Quilling Paper Strips: These are the colourful, pre-cut strips of paper that you’ll be working with.
  2. A Slotted Quilling Tool: This is your magic wand! It’s a pen-like tool with a small slot at the tip to hold your paper strip as you roll.
  3. Craft Glue: A good quality craft glue with a fine tip is essential for securing your shapes.
  4. Tweezers: For picking up and placing your delicate coils precisely.
  5. (Optional) A Circle Sizer Board: This helps you make uniform-sized coils, which is great for beginners.

Your First Project: Let's Make a Simple Flower!

Time to get hands-on! A simple flower is the perfect first project for any beginner.

Step 1: Make a Coil Take one paper strip and slide one end into the slot of your quilling tool. Roll the tool with your fingers until the entire strip is wound into a tight coil.

Step 2: Create a Teardrop Shape Carefully slide the coil off the tool. Let it loosen a little bit, then glue the end to secure it. Now, gently pinch one side of the circle to create a teardrop shape. Voilà, you’ve made your first petal!

Step 3: Make Your Petals Repeat Step 2 five more times to create a total of six teardrop-shaped petals. Look at you go!

Step 4: Assemble Your Flower Make one more tight coil for the centre of your flower. Now, arrange your six teardrop "petals" around the centre coil and glue them into place.

You did it! You’ve just created your first piece of quilling art.
